The Glasses have been selected on INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL DETMOLD

"The Glasses" by Seyyed Hussein Mousavi will be screened Friday, June 8, 15:00 PM .






Story of this film is about two friends; one of them a boy and other one is a girl. The boy whose name is MEHRAB Finds a book full of mad and takes it home with himself. The girl whose name RAHELEH accidentally sees the book. None of them can read the book, so they go to Raheleh`s grand father to teach them how to read. The boy accidentally breaks the arm of the gather’s glasses. In order to learn reading they should fix the glasses. They try many ways which you will discover during the course of the film.


The Glasses short film also was official selection on 14 Tel Aviv International Student Film Festival 2012.


This short film was produced under a contract with Mandegar Group and CETENAGROUP for Kabul US Embassy.


8th ISFF

Established in 2012, the Police Film Festival brings together police themed short-films for a dynamic look at law and order in our societies. .

The festival will begin Wednesday, May 16 with 5 days of screenings, discussion panels and Q&As with directors.

Sixteen police themed short films by award-winning Afghan filmmakers are competing in the categories of documentary, animation and narrative. Between screenings festivalgoers are invited to participate in a series of televised discussions and debates with filmmakers, civil rights activists and police leaders; becoming a space for thought, reflection and dialogue.


FINDING ZALMAY

Ashes and a solitary letter are all that remain of three years of post from the last postman. The new postman dedicates himself to delivering the salvaged letter, addressed to Zalmay. He traces Zalmay from police post to police post in what becomes a "Saving Private Ryan" mission.  Director Nabizadah gives ample tribute to the beauty of the landscape and the isolated existence of people in the sporadic villages and police posts that the postman encounters.

Hot Days of Torkham deals with the subject of police attrition in Afghanistan. In Aziz Dildar’s highly stylized film journey, two police recruits abandon their post and sell their weapons. Their return home through Afghanistan’s majestic landscape is juxtaposed by the poverty, death and kidnapping that they witness. The regret and sense of duty eats away at one of the men and forces them both to account for their wrongdoing.

Miriam was never one to stay home and watch dolefully out the window as the boys played. She and her best childhood friend devise ways to join in on the boys cops and robbers games, that lead to her becoming a policewoman years later.

A street child on the streets of Mazar spends his days polishing boots outside a corner shop. He sees the local policeman extort money from taxi drivers and take pay-offs from local business owners. An interaction between the policeman and the boy sees the child act as the man’s conscience and condemn him for taking what’s not rightfully his.

SABOOR: KABUL’S “UNCLE TRAFFIC”

15 policemen inspect all the cars that enter Dehbori district. Brought from their villages to the overpopulated Kabul cityscape, these 15 policemen live confined together in 3 green metal living containers. Support is limited and communication from command is rare, but as we follow them at their daily ring-of-steel checkpoint, we see how they develop a natural code to protect the community where they are strangers and yet bound to protect.

The Proposal follows the dialogue of travelers on a bus as an older woman praises her police sons virtues to a beautiful young girl. Who wouldn’t want to marry a policeman? The dialogue, comedic at times, continues with everyone’s own police experiences when suddenly the bus is stopped at gun-point and the passengers are victims of highway robbery.

In the dead of winter, Salang embodies snow filled treachery where avalanches are a common occurrence and road accidents are the leading cause of death. Cold Mountain follows the local police in Salang and shows the rigours of police work in this environment. Through interviews with travelers and local inhabitants the film is able to show the important relationship that has developed between the Salang police force and community.

Sajjadi’s 3D animation turns the simple act of crossing the road into a perilous adventure. A sharply dressed white gloved policeman makes safe passage for the overwhelmed pedestrian.

A group of naughty boys wreack havoc with their water pistols as as they spray a kind old woman in the face. Their watery antics are put to a halt when a policeman restores order and helps the old woman to her feet.

An action packed animation of a child alone and afraid against the night. A looming figure comes to his rescue and reveals himself as the child’s protector until the sunrise brings safety and the sound of chirping birds.

NAJMAOLDIN
DOCUMENTARY

Directed by: Ahmad Siyar Noorzad
Najmaoldin is an Uzbek police officer who came from the north to take the role of Police Chief in Logar province. Ethnic and language difference were obvious barriers, however Najmaoldin has embraced the local culture and language and won the support of the local community for the police. In this short-documentary, Noorzad gives viewers a rare glimpse into the day of an Afghan police chief.

GUIDELINES FOR FEATURE FILM PRODUCTION GRANT
SUMMER 2012 GRANTING CYCLE

APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED: MAY 15, 2012 - JULY 16, 2012

APPLICATION DEADLINE: JULY 16, 2012

Definition of Grants:
  • The Global Film Initiative awards up to ten (10) Production and/or Honorable Mention grants per funding cycle (Winter and Summer).
  • Grants are awarded to film projects in pre-production, production and post-production
  • Each Production Grant is in the amount of USD $10,000 with a pre-sale option.
  • Each Honorable Mention award is in the amount of USD $1,000.
  • Grants are not awarded to documentary and short film projects.

Pre-Sale Option:
  • Each applicant may request to be considered for a pre-sale option for U.S. and Canadian distribution.
  • Applicants who elect the pre-sale option may be offered a distribution contract for all U.S. and Canadian distribution rights if awarded a grant; the finished film will be included in the Initiative's Global Lens film series for distribution.

Application Instructions
  1. Determine project eligibility
  2. If project is eligible, complete and send two (2) copies of application form with two (2) copies of all supporting materials to The Global Film Initiative before application deadline (projects submitted without required application and supporting materials will not be accepted)
  3. All applications must be postmarked by the deadline, and received within five (5) business days of the deadline. The Global Film Initiative will confirm via email receipt of all projects received, but will not track shipments of individual projects.

Eligibility Requirements
In order to be considered for a Global Film Initiative grant, a project must meet all of the eligibility criteria outlined below:
  • Application is for narrative, feature-length film project from DAC nation (more than 65 min.; no documentary or short films accepted)
  • Project is in pre-production, production or post-production stage (no projects in development accepted)
  • Production occurs in same nation of application (DAC nation)
  • Director was born in and is citizen of same nation of application (DAC nation)*
  • 50% or more of project’s total production funding secured/received
  • International, world and/or regional premiere(s) scheduled to occur after Sept. 30, 2012
*exceptions regarding citizenship may apply to applications from territories and/or regions without recognized sovereign governments

Materials to be Submitted With Application:
Two (2) copies of each of the following English-translated materials must be included (incomplete applications will not be processed):
  1. Completed application form
  2. Finished English-translated screenplay/script
  3. Rushes/dailies, selected scenes or rough cut/final cut (if available)
  4. Complete production budget
  5. Finance plan
  6. Copies of agreements with production financiers
  7. Complete production schedule
  8. Synopsis and logline
  9. Director’s statement
  10. Biographies of key production personnel
  11. Previous film(s) of filmmaker(s) (if available)
Note:
  • The Global Film Initiative does not fund documentary or short films.
  • Applications must be submitted by mail or courier — electronic or faxed applications will not be accepted.
  • Submission materials will not be returned to applicant.
  • All grant amounts are at the sole discretion of the Global Film Initiative.

Screening of "Death to the Camera" at Hot Docs




"Death to the Camera" will be screened Thursday, May 3, 9:45 PM and Friday, May 4, 9:30 PM at Innis Town Hall.
In Death to the Camera a camera moves among women working on a job site.  As they joke and fight with each other, the mood repeatedly shifts between belly laughs and rage.  While they wait for their pay, they consider how to cover their basic expenses, what happens to international aid and whether Karzai is a crook or a servant of the people.  Is the camera revealing anything truthful, or simply inciting these women to present what they think ‘the other’ wants to hear? 
The film is eligible to win Best Short Documentary and the Audience Award.

Sayed Qasem Husseini, is a member of MIRIAM FILMS, now studies in the Cinema and Fine Arts department at Kabul University. He has previously produced a short video report on carpet making (Carpet drugged – this film was official selection on WOMAN VOICES NOW FILM FESTIVAL IN USA), served as a sports reporter for a community newspaper, and works as a freelance production assistant.
Last year his film "Death to the Camera" was winner of 1st AUTUMN HUMAN RIGHTS FILM FESTIVAL in Kabul.
Husseini is working as project manager and director of documentary film department in MIRIAM FILMS.
